Chapter Seven Honesty

Skylar was eating a huge half of a turkey sandwich in the back seat when I got into the car.

“Hey, Sky,” I said, shutting the car door and buckling my seat belt. “Dad, I need your opinion.”

Dad eased the car out of the restaurant parking lot. He chuckled. “Those words are music to my ears. What’s up?”

I turned in my seat to face him. “Are we supposed to be friends with the Salas family? Like, what should I do about being science partners in school with their daughter? Are they going to take all our business away? That’s what Kelsey says. And why is Casey helping them? I feel like our friendship is dead. And what’s up with this bake-off idea? Is Nans crazy to do this? What if it hurts us? And how’s it going to work, anyway? I mean…”

“Whoa! Slow down! You’ve got ten different topics going here. Start over and go one by one.”

I took a deep breath and explained everything to him. It felt good to get it all laid out at once, finally.

My dad thought for a second and then he began.

“Okay, I don’t know anything about a bake-off. Let’s start with the Salas family. I had a chance to ask Grandpa about them and his history with them. He told me…”

Dad went on to say pretty much what my aunt Melissa had said earlier. Friends for a long time, combining ordering, yada yada. He agreed with Aunt Mel that their bakery would not eat into our profits at Donut Dreams.

“People who like donuts, like donuts,” he said. “Most people will go to both places for different reasons. Now, as for being science partners with their daughter: Is she nice?”

“Actually, she is,” I admitted. “I like her, but I wasn’t really sure we should be friends, because of our competing businesses. Kelsey says she’s the enemy. And I don’t like that she’s taking over Casey. On the other hand, it’s nice to be friends with someone in kind of the same business as us.”

“Hmm. Well, you should definitely be friends with her then. What’s her name?”

“Ria,” I said. “Short for Maria.”

“You can’t help what Kelsey thinks right now, but make up your own mind about Ria. Don’t hold other people’s grudges. The Salas family is really nice and not our enemy.

“And as for Casey, I’m in a little over my head when it comes to middle school girls’ friendships. That might be one for Nans. All I can say is, you and Casey have been best friends your whole life, and that counts for a lot. If she’s upsetting you, you need to tell her,” Dad said.

I sighed. “I don’t know. It’s awkward.”

We pulled into the driveway and Dad turned off the car.

“Give us a sec, Skylar, okay?” Dad said.

Sky got out, still chewing, and headed inside, while Dad and I stayed where we were.

Dad turned to face me. “Lindsay, it’s best to be direct in life. Asking questions so you have the facts and telling people straight up how you feel is the only way to go.
